District 9 VFW Meeting at Wahoo

Ed Perley - 1/30/2020

There was a District 9 Meeting on Sunday, January 26, at the Veterans Memorial Club.
Awards were presented to the District 9 winners of Voice of Democracy, Patriot's Pen, and Teacher of the Year.
Rachel Pohl of Yutan won first place for Voice of Democracy, and Sherry Loos won first place
 for Teacher of the Year.

Rachel Pohl receives Voice of Democracy Award.
Sherry Loos receives Teacher of the Year award.
During the business meeting, members were informed about several bills being considered in the State House  that are of concern for veterans.  Bills we should be looking at are LB153, LB952, LB851, and LB770.

LB952 provides for homestead exemptions for veterans, but if a veteran sells his house, he loses his exemption, and the new owner will automatically gain the exemption, even if he is not a veteran.  LB770 would eliminate park entry fees for veterans.  LB851 would make it so that a veteran would not have to prove he is elgible for the homestead exemption every year.

Opposition for two proposed Red Flag Laws was expressed, because a gun owner would have to go to court to regain his right to own weapons if a Red Flag warning was filed against him.

We were reminded that Legislative Day is scheduled on Friday, January 31.  It is a great opportunity for us to visit with our representatives.  Show up at the Capital building at 8:00 AM.

The State Surgeon gave a short talk.  He said we should follow the following principles in our relations with other veterans.
1.  We are all veterans.
2.  Show support for all of them.
3.  Visit a veteran.
4.  Show respect to every veteran.

It was announced that the Wahoo post has a hospital bed that is available for any veteran who needs one.

The next District 9 meeting will be on April 26 at Lincoln.
